STRAND 2 Know about job roles in the television and film industries

really good BBC careers site with technical (and other) jobs

http://id.bbc.co.uk/careers/our-people/nick-faulkner

this will be useful for

  • understanding job roles for strand 2 (as there are a number of research and other jobs on there - with info about what the roles involve)
  • and put it on your list of websites etc for jobs in the media (for strand 5) - as it is a good resource for finding employment and info about careers in the media

STRAND 5 Be able to prepare personal career development material

to cover this part - you can easily adapt ‘personal statement’ material either from your UCAS application or elsewhere to cover these following points:

Transferable skills: personal attributes, eg knowledge and skills, commitment, efficiency, reliability, punctuality, self-presentation; key skills (application of number, communication, information and communication technology; working with others, improving own learning and performance, problem solving)

just do them as short, brief, and clear bullet points - don’t write an essay / detailed statement - there is no need to

STRAND 5 Be able to prepare personal career development material

to cover this part of Strand 5…

Presentation for employment: portfolio; showreel; personal website; curriculum vitae (CV); application letters; interviewing skills; presentation skills; self presentation (linguistic codes, dress codes, interpersonal skills); references

- make sure you have a showreel - embed a youtube playlist - and some evidence of pre-production work on your ‘weebly’ website

- put your CV on there also and find 3 or 4 relevant jobs that you could apply for - print screen them and put them on there as pictures. (Mandy.com is a good resource here - http://mandy.com/1/filmtvjobs.cfm?jt=uki)

- and for one of these jobs write a ‘letter of application’

for this part you should have covered many of these things with Ms Lemmer’s research presentation… (if you did it that is)

interviewing skills; presentation skills; self presentation (linguistic codes, dress codes, interpersonal skills);

references - put down your Media Teachers as referees…

STRAND 5 Be able to prepare personal career development material

you need to show an awareness of the relevant SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS  for working in the film/TV industry:

education and training, eg full-time, part-time, Level 2, Level 3, graduate; (you should know about these - just do a little research into the available courses in Film/TV at the different Levels) essentially Level 2 is GCSE equivalent, Level 3 is A level… graduate is degree… some useful info on site below (do your own research also)

http://courses.skillset.org/

skills analysis (personal skills, technological skills, training needs, personal development plan) -this is something you should know about yourself a little already - certainly your personal skills and technological skills - which programs you are good with and your filming / recording skills - create a simple page on your website that covers these 4 headings (1 personal skills, 2 technological skills, 3 training needs, 4 personal development plan) covering your training needs and development plan - how you will improve your media skills

sources of information eg Sector Skills Councils, unions, careers services (this is covered by the research I suggested you do into Skillset anf BECTU)

career development: training on the job, continuing professional development, self training - these are all pretty self-explanatory, just do some basic research to show your understanding - you may find some useful case studies or advice on Skillset or in other online resources

http://www.skillset.org/film/jobs/direction/article_3881_1.asp

in the first paragraph of this article it explains how a runner is basically ‘on the job training’ for working in film & TV

‘self training’ is what many of you do already - as you are so interested in editing and filming - you go away and learn from online tutorials or just by experimenting with Final Cut, Flash, After Effects etc

STRAND 5 Be able to prepare personal career development material

list of websites, national newspapers and trade magazines for film/media jobs

you need to make a database of relevant resources (websites, magazines, newspapers etc) for finding jobs in the media:

list the name of the company/magazine/newspaper

- provide its contact details (essentially the web address)

- and also how/why it is useful for working in the film/media industry - i.e. the kind of jobs it advertises, whether it is UK, USA or internationally based, and how useful it would be for YOU if you were searching for a job in the film/media industry

(you have to treat this part of the unit as if you are actually looking for a job in the film/media industry - so you should also decide on a job you would like to - and be able to - do in the media which would allow you to evaluate how useful a website/job resource would be for you )
